A sign of the times
Written by Grant
Friday, 19 December 2008

Here is a Christmas greeting that I received from a client ... enjoy !

We send our politically correct best wishes for:

An environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their own religion as well as those who choose not to practice a religion at all.

Additionally, a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the generally accepted calendar year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions have helped make society great, without regard to the race, creed, colour, religious, or sexual preferences of the wishes.

(Disclaimer: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and no responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday spirit.)"

.. a sign of the times ..

WSUS 3 : Relocating WID
Written by Grant
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

The other day I had this problem at work ... my WSUS 3 server was running out of disk space. I was due to go on holidays the next day and did not want to worry about my network not being updated while I was gone. So I decided to fix the problem. I began researching moving the Windows Internal Database (which is used to drive a WSUS server when SQL Server is not installed) on a Windows 2003 SP2 server to a separate drive/partition/volume.

I googled for hours on this subject and could not find tthe solution I was after; and here's me thinking that someone might have done this in the past. But it seems that the only solutions out there are ones that are dated in the late ninties (exageration). So I thought that I would post my findings and hopefully help someone out there how is having the same issue. So here it goes ...

  1. download and install the SQL Native Client and SQLCMD pack from here
  2. Stop "Update Servcies" and "World Wide Web Publishing Services"
  3. open a command prompt
  4. change directory to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn (default location for the sqlcmd install)
  5. type - sqlcmd -S \\.\pipe\mssql$microsoft##ssee\sql\query -E
  6. type - EXEC sp_detach_db @dbname = 'SUSDB'
  7. type - go
  8. The copy the database to your new location eg e:\WSUSDatabase; which is used in the below example
  9. type - EXEC sp_attach_db @dbname = 'SUSDB', @filename1 = 'E:\WSUSDatabase\SUSDB.mdf', @filename2 = 'E:\WSUSDatabase\SUSDB_log.ldf'
  10. type - go
  11. Start "Update Servcies" and "World Wide Web Publishing Services"
  12. Done.

Hope this helps someone out there on the Intraweb ...

Magnetica
Written by Grant
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

I know that you have all been waiting with baited breath for my review of the new Metallica Album - Death Magnetic, but this is the first time in a few weeks that I have had a chance to post anything .. iPod down and here it goes.

This is the album that every Metallica fan has been waiting for. Some say their best album since ..and Justice in 1988, but I say that each album was good at the time and in its own way and that every album leads from the previous one to the next one. But I am not the only one who thinks this ... see here. In saying that I will say that the new Metallica album is a heavy metal riff fest in a style that only Metallica can produce and it was worth every minute of the 5 year wait to hear. If you are even slightly interested in Metallica then you have already read all the reviews I have and have probably even conjoured your own opinions. So here are mine ... highlights; All Nightmare Long and The Judas Kiss ... lowlights; yet to find any after more than 20 complete listens to the album.

Dulak Updates
Written by Grant
Sunday, 18 May 2008

Regular visitors to this site may have noticed a few changes occurring to the site over the last couple of weeks and even months. A few cosmetic, like the new banner and style changes and also to the content. But, the first thing you all should take note of is that the RSS feed has changed and that you should update you reader with the latest link; available on the left hand side of this page, if you want to continue to be kept up to date with the latest Dulak news. The second is that there have been about 8 new photo galleries added over the weekend. It has probably been almost a year since I added the last gallery, so I apolagise for the time delay but all things come to those who wait, right?  ... well then why am I still waiting for my first lotto win.

 Anyway, enjoy !

It currently contains with a few snippets of the latest album and all the last info on when it will be released etc etc ..  with the promise of more to come as the release date draws closer. You know want to go and check it out... so go there NOW, !

But come right back here when you have finished ...

Unbelievable
Written by Grant
Saturday, 10 May 2008

ImageToday has been a great day. A cool morning with my boy; doing the father/son bonding thing and spending quality time together, my daughters first birthday; with enough coin and preparation to make it happen right and not go over board, a good day with family celebrating my daughters birthday followed up by a great dinner and a few drinks to top it off.

Sounds like a great day right? Well I must say that I didn't think it would be as good as it was but it got better. While I was outside watering my Bonsai collection at 10 ish at night, I saw my first shooting star. It was almost unbelievable as I have heard about them; as has everyone, but have never seen one myself. It was amazing and even spiritual; if you are like that. I would describe it like a bright star moving through the sky from one point to another and then just suddenly disappearing. What really blows my mind is the fact that it happened so long ago and that the vision that I saw took so long to get the our planet that for me to be looking up at the sky at that exact moment to see it happen is like ... well you know, the odds are not very good.

So with that in mind I thought I would make a wish ...  but I am not going to tell you what it is and if it comes true, well you will probably hear about it here.....

Maybe.

New Album Update
Written by Grant
Friday, 04 April 2008

If my readers out there are even slightly interested in when the new Metallica album will be out, well so am I. I read late last year that it was Febrary 2008 and then April 2008. Now in the last few days I am reading September 2008. I know that it has been a long time since their last album and with the new producer encouraging the boys to channel "Puppets" and "Lightning" and with more tours being announced as the days go by, then I would have to say that the new album is not far away, and being a MetClub member for the last 8 years then I can say that I am one person waiting for this album with silent anticapation.

FYI I have fathered two children since the last Metallica album ....
